I love the Marvel Universe, and I especially love the X-Men, but I have never read any of the comic books. I want to start from the beginning so that I can understand all of the characters’ back stories. What book should I get first? Is there a giant compilation out there that includes a bunch of issues together? Where should I start?
it should be noted that marvel has been in business for over 40 years and many of their most popular characters have been in on going comics stories for just as long. because of that you shouldn’t worry about getting everyone back stories.
most of us who read comics didn’t have a full understanding of everyone back story. we just jumped in and read the comics that look good to us on the newsstand or in the comic book stores. because of this part of me wants to say just jump in.
but if you want to start in the past and work your way up I can’t blame you.
there are a number of compilations that collect a bunch of issues of comic book series.
since you say you especially love the X-men I think that is where you should start.
a good place to start that will give you the most comics for your books would be 40 years of the x-men dvd which allows you to read the first 40 years of the uncanny x-men comics (1963-2003)
they also have similar dvds for spider-man, the avengers
if you want actuall comics that you can hold in your hand and printed on paper then there are a lot of trade paper backs you can get.
here are some good places to start. (thought Marvel sells a lot of reprints of their work and you may find better choices in differnt formats/prices etc)
marvel masterworks: the x-men vol 1-6 collect around the first 6 years of x-men comics.
marvel masterworks: the unncanny x-men vols 1 to 5. this series of reprints collect some of the early issues of Chris Claremont (he’s a writer who had a long run on the comic) run on the book and those issues introduced a number of new members that became long term icons of the team (such as Storm and Wolvirine)
or you can get the uncanny x-men omnibus which collects the same early claremont stuff (give or take) in one big book (but becuase it so much stuff it also cost a lot of money)
X-men the dark phoenix saga collects a an important x-men story and is seen as a "classic" among x-men fans.
I’m sorry for such a huge list (and this is really only the tip of the iceburg) and i hope I don’t scare you away from comics.
actually a good thing to do maybe to find a local comic book store (look in the phone book or use http://www.comicshoplocator.com/ to find one close to you) and say that you are new to comics and would like to know what are some good comics to get you started (and tell them what characters you are looking to follow)
most comic book stores are staffed with friendly and hightly knowledge people (and if by the office shoot you find one that isn’t then just go to another shop)
have fun and don’t be affaid to look at the work done by smaller comic publishers
