Who’s the leader of the Marvel Comics superheroes?

October 242009

We all know Superman is the leader of the DC Comics superheroes with Batman (I think) being second in command. So, for Marvel, I’m guessing it’s either Captain America (since he kinda is marvel’s version of superman) or Ironman.

I don’t know. Who is it?

I know I’m gonna sound like a really big dork here but screw it. There really isn’t a "leader" persay in either Marvel or DC comics. Each universe has flagship characters that help identify their perspecive universe. You are correct that Superman and Batman are the flagship characters for the DC universe. I would venture to say that Spiderman and Captain America are the flagship characters for Marvel.

Where to get started with Marvel Comics style sketching.?

October 182009

I have enjoyed drawing and sketching comic book characters for years, but I have a fear of sucking at it so I don’t draw as much as I would like. I’m looking for someone to tell me what materials I need to get started at drawing this style of art. (ex. what type of pencils, sketch paper, etc…) Also is there a good site or forum where I can visit to ask these questions and receive tips?

You could probably ask questions like this at deviantART or Concept Art.com

I’d take a look at some of the supplies of this artist.

At the end of her tutorial she lists the supplies she used and you could use those same supplies to get started. Good luck!

What paperbacks of Marvel comics should I get?

October 142009

I want to jump into Marvel comics, specifically X-men, but open to other titles, how do these paperbacks they sell at Barnes and Noble and Amazon work, and which stories would you recommend?

People have different tastes. Just because I think something’s good doesn’t mean you’ll also think it’s good.

How to debate that Marvel comics are better then DC comics?

October 102009

i have a debate today and i have no idea about comic books…my side is saying marvel is way better then DC…please help!!!!

It’s an interesting debate with no definite answers. It’s really a matter of opinion. If you’re talking about box office success, Marvel wins easily. If you are talking about most popular characters, Marvel has more of them but Superman and Batman (DC) remain as popular as ANY Marvel character.

Marvel has all the characters who have appeared in movies in the last 10 years. Some are Spiderman, Ironman, Daredevel, HULK, Wolverine, X-Men, Fantastic 4, Elektra, Blade.

DC has Superman and Batman.

DC was the first and remained the most well known from the time of it’s inception, in 1938 with Superman, until Marvel’s Silver age in 1960.

People could identify with Marvel’s stories and characters. Superman and Batman talked like your parents and teachers. They had all the answers, gave orders and took down the bad guys with little problem. They always smiled and never had personal problems. They stood taller than everyone else and the third most popular character was a kid who ran around in green underwear.

Then came Marvel. In 1960, they started with the Fantastic 4. They often had real life problems, fought among themselves and told jokes. HULK was a tragic story of a scientist trapped in his own work.

Then came the teenaged Spiderman. He had girlfriend problems, got picked on in school and had a ton of problems with trying to help his aunt while struggling through school. His best friend was a drug addict and he was caught in a love triangle. Real life stuff. He talked like your friends, not your parents or teachers.

By the time DC caught onto Marvel’s formula, it was too late. Marvel had already run away with the ball, so to speak.

DC has learned from some of this but, until they hit the big screen, and stop worrying so much about box office numbers, they will continue to lag behind. They need to showcase their other characters.

Perhaps, the best test is to ask an 88 year old lady in Billings Montana. SHE could tell you who Superman is. Bet she’s never heard of Wolverine.

So, it’s really all in how you view it.
