Marvel comics -Dr Strange. What is the reason for the spots on his arms? My son asked me the other day, and a quick web search hasn’t helped. Thanks in advance.

pic please … I don’t remember any spots on his arms but if I happen to remember something about it. I’ll let you know.

Look, those are gloves. Have been since the days of Steve Ditko. I don’t remember the costume he had on Gene Colan’s first run on the script clearly — his face was covered during it — but otherwise he’s had the outfit Ditko designed, including gloves. I think it was just a design choice and doesn’t need much significance since it’s gloves, not his real hands.

I don’t believe it has ever been explained by either Stan Lee (the original writer) or Steve Ditko (the original artist).

However, if I had to make an informed guess, I’d go by his origin story.

Dr. Stephen Strange was a reputed brain surgeon who got into a car accident and had nerve damage to his hands. It was because of this nerve damage that he could not practice surgery again. When he went to Tibet to learn under the Ancient One, I would imagine that he gained a way to repair his hands mystically.

A side effect of that power and spell might be the spots on them.

    That’s my guess, anyway.
